Fayetteville's Revolutionary Beginnings

Founded immediately following the Revolutionary War, Fayetteville was named in honor of French General Lafayette. Fayetteville proved to be an important town in the country's early development, serving as host to a 1789 convention during which the North Carolina General Assembly ratified the U.S. Constitution and paved the way for creation of the country's first public university, UNC-Chapel Hill.

Role in the Civil War

During the Civil War, Fayetteville was the site of a Confederate arsenal, which Sherman and his troops attacked in their famous march through the South. Cumberland County also saw fighting during the last calvary battle of the war -- the Battle of Monroe's Crossroads.
